We all want show our appreciation for the services we receive when traveling, but it is difficult at times to stay abreast of the current etiquette. Here is a quick guide to thanking the folks who help you enjoy your trip.
Skycap It is customary to tip $1 per bag, $2 for very heavy bags. An additional $1-$2 is optional for curbside check-in.
Valet Parking Attendant $1-$3 is an appropriate tip to thank your attendant for parking or returning the car. It is not necessary to tip for parking, but always tip when your car is returned.
Hotel Doorman/Lobby Attendant No tip is necessary for opening the door for you. If your doorman hails a cab for you, thank him with $1. If he is especially helpful, offering dinner recommendations, directions, or other information, tip $5-$10.
Bellhop/Bell Captain In most situations, $1-$3 per bag is suitable.
Housekeeping $1-$3 per day is customary, depending on the amount of mess and the grade of the hotel. For higher-end hotels, you should leave $5-$10 per day. Leave the tip someplace obvious along with a note that clearly says “Housekeeping.” Remember that chambermaids often rotate, so you need to tip daily.
Room Service Gratuity is often included in the room service bill, so be sure to check. If not, 15%-20% of the bill is appropriate, depending on service.
Concierge For ordinary advice and simple reservations, tipping is unnecessary. If he does something out of his way, like getting difficult restaurant reservations or tickets to a sold-out event, $5-$20 (or more) is the norm, depending on the difficulty. You can tip at the time of service or at the end of your stay.
Pool Attendant No tip is necessary if you are only provided a towel. If your attendant gives you exceptional service by reserving lounge chairs, lending reading material, or giving you sunscreen, tip $3-$5.
Tour Guides If you are pleased with the tour, you can tip $2-$5 to the tour guide for a full day tour. Tip a private guide more, 10%-15% for the entire party. Don’t forget the driver! Give $1-$2 to the driver, or more if he/she is helpful with luggage or souvenirs.
Taxi Service Taxi drivers should receive 15% of the bill.
Limo Service Tip your driver 15%-20% of the daily cost of service.
